20.45: R3 from Port-Louis to Senpuav
In order to gain some time Odette tried to dispatch Maille to an out-of-the-way place. She travelled herself to Korea where, disguised as Tatjana Koslow, she sent signals to Santa Lemusa. It worked. Maille was dispatched directly from Sweden to Korea, where their paths actually crossed one evening in downtown Gwangju – though Maille was naturally completely unaware of all this.
Odette's long journey meant that Koslow had come within a hair's breadth of starving to death in the cellar of the house in Senpuav. Of course, she had left him some kilos of peanuts, chocolate and biscuits to eat during her absence – but, in his agitation, the professor had polished the food off within two days of her departure. When she returned, she found him lying in the cellar half-dead from hunger. From that moment onwards Odette began to steer her agent back towards Santa Lemusa – and what could be a more suitable steering-centre than the office of the Lemusan Secret Service? So, one morning she set off for Rue de Prague with a frown on her brow and a walnut-cake in her hand – the frown was home-made; the cake however came from the oven of Maître Seugrem.
With the help of the professor's radio-watch she succeeded in diverting the agent to Sharjah. Even though the little rogue she had engaged there wanted to squeeze more money out of her. And when she had not relented, he had left the watch in the desert, where it was promptly discovered by Maille.
