Scene 3: The Gold Rush

How Hektor Maille found possibly his first gold nugget and fantasised about a future as a millionaire.

One Day in the Life of Odette Sissay

11.30: Port-Louis, Place des Herbes

Odette parked the Peugeot at the Place des Herbes, flicked the cigar into a fountain, walked up Rue Thasard and entered the butcher Oskar Seugrem's shop. As usual the butcher lost his composure the moment he noticed that she was there. His hitherto reddish cheeks began to turn dark carmine and the slight twitch beside his left eye suddenly became more pronounced. He clutched onto a large knife and began to mechanically mince an already prepared and bundled Tournedos together with duck liver.

«Salve amicus, optima vitae possessio», said Odette and the butcher cut his finger – but with such a coy laugh that it appeared as though he was in the process of cutting a piece of his favourite sausage. Oskar Seugrem loved women who ate meat – and he loved women who spoke Latin. And to find a combination of the two was, naturally, absolutely unique.
