How Hektor Maille delved deep into himself and, on finding nothing special within, resurfaced with a light heart.

One Day in the Life of Odette Sissay

13.05: Port-Louis, Vieux Port, Aquarium

Samson Godet knew that and so he waited for Odette before the mighty glass tank with the jellyfish. He was a great friend of aquaria and could gaze for hours at the fish. So much so that when he was elected president of Santa Lemusa three years earlier, he had promptly had an aquarium installed in his office in the Maison Ronde. To begin with, he had had precious coral fish in his glass tank, which, for some reason or the other, had opted to routinely spring out of the water onto the Persian carpet or onto his desk. A more than 50-franc chocolate-doctor-fish had managed one night to catapult itself directly into the half-empty coffee mug on his desk – and when he had arrived at work the following morning, he had seen two dull and woeful eyes staring at him from out of the porcelain cup, whose brownish stains revealed the agony of the creature in the remainings of his coffee. It was not without regret that he had quietly switched over to goldfish – a fish so commonplace that it was ill-suited to the status of a president, but one that nevertheless performed its rounds efficiently and without protest.
