When Mercier was out of sight, Odette bent down, removed the toe-ring with the lion head on it and slipped on the silver one that she had received from Marie. She put the bag with the tripe soup and her sandals on the floor and tugged her wet skirt down with both hands – so that her hipbones came into view, along with their fine, steel-blue network of veins with curvy ends that could have resembled the gulf streams in the Atlantic Ocean. She stretched her back, opened the top-most button of her blouse and stepped in.
