Odette went around the glassy butchery in which Oskar Seugrem presented all his carefully pared roasts, his beef chops, lamb tripe, leg of wild boar and horse steak, and stepped close to the butcher, lifted his hand and, in a swift and utterly natural gesture, put his swollen and bleeding finger, on which there were still remnants of foie gras to be seen, into her mouth – quite like one would with a carrot or a cigarette. For a split second one saw how the blood mixed on her tongue with saliva and bits of duck liver and how it created a shiny reddish-gold bubble.
