Scene 24

The Sashimi was handed out on board and Maille was invited to tuck into it with Mr Lee and his friends. The fish tasted somewhat tough and cartilaginous – at once satiny and faintly sour.

«Pisces natare oported», Oskar Seugram had remarked when Maille had told him about his new mission and the journeys it called for: «Fish must swim». That strange comment by his butcher flashed through Maille's mind from time to time – but he was still unsure exactly how the old philological tripe master had meant it.

At the moment though, he was preoccupied with other questions – above all: If Tatjana was not here, and of that there was absolutely no doubt, where was she?
