Where the kingfisher fishes

Boca do Juma (Brazil) at Paraná do Mamori (map)

Thursday, 29 October 2015

Here and there, the oily dark bodies of dolphins bounce like waves out of the water – a short snort and then they disappear under water. Sometimes the prey resists – during the battle in the ring the victors allow their reddish underside to be seen. Small yellow and orange speckled anchovies spring out in swarms from the water as if they have been electrified – and fall like raindrops back into their element. Except for the kingfisher, capable of falling like an arrow from quite a height, that grabs one of these flapping creatures from the swarm in its beak. On the other bank, a cayman now emerges from the water – flaunting between its teeth a mighty piranha.
