Observations

Have I ever seen a blue sky devoid of white streaks of condensation trails? In good weather, the omnipresent flight paths of large aeroplanes are as important for the appearance of the firmament as the clouds and the swallows are. In the olden days the heavens must have looked to human beings like an unreachable zone, an endless alien vastness. And it must have been easier for them to believe that there lived a God in that heaven. Today, we have reached his heaven in our flying machines – where once God’s will was the only thing that existed, there are now traffic rules.

Changed, too, has the concept of privacy. What sense of seclusion can we possibly develop when other people constantly fly over our heads? And what happens to the sweet sound of silence when at all times we can a supersonic roar in our ears?
