What it is to be a true Qatar citizen comes to light on the streets of Doha in the early evening of December 18, when the country’s National Day is celebrated with pomp and glory. Children sit on car-roofs and wave flags in white and chestnut-red. Their fathers drum on the steering wheels in muffled rhythm to Khaliji music. And the mothers sit in the backseats and watch the rockets whizzing through the already gleaming and flashing sky over the bay of Doha. A party for all: for almost all, anyway, because naturally it requires more than just horsepower to be there.
