Qatar is a pure desert land that sticks like a hand-axe into the Arabian Gulf. The country is almost entirely flat and dry, unrelieved by even a single oasis. It was once an island – just a slight bump of land forming the link to the Arabian landmass. Were this landmass to sink one day, then one could swim through the emirate, and Qatar would be the world’s first desert country under water.
