Uluru or Ayers Rock

The Story of the Mala

The Mala folk ascended the Uluru and there they began a long-lasting ceremony around a pole that they planted on the highest point on the mountain. Hardly had the ceremony commenced than a delegation of Mulga-seed people from the west landed up at the sacred site. But a ceremony that has begun has to be performed without interruption until the end. Therefore, the Mala folk had to refuse the Mulga-seed people an invitation.

This refusal so offended the Mulga-seed people that they created, with the use of mighty magic, an evil monster called Dingo Kurpanngu, also known as Kurpany. The monster proceeded to attack the Mala, who were still preoccupied with their ceremony. It killed most of the Mala and dragged the surviving members as far as the south. No member of the Mala ever returned to the Uluru.
