Cape Shirahama

Scene 14

Inside the plastic bag Maille found a map of the peninsula Boso at the end of which the lighthouse of Shirahama was located. But the fierce wind blowing over the rocks at the coast made it very hard for him to hold the map open for more than a couple of seconds.

He decided to postpone reading it until later. He walked down to the village shop, where he bought himself a packet of the locally produced Hijiki algae, and then rode with the bus and train back via Tateyama to Tokyo.

When he got off the underground train a few hours later at Roppongi Itchōme, the sun was setting. He drank a sun-downer of chilled white wine at a bar, proceeding to realise, from the manner in which the rather sour liquid made his tummy rumble, that he was extraordinarily hungry.
