Ho Chi Minh City, Saigon River

Scene 17

The flags were quite another matter. Fluttering all through the city were flags: red ones with yellow stars. The red represented the leadership claim of the communist party, the five points of the stars stood for the five sections that peopled the nation: workers, farmers, soldiers, intellectuals and the youth. The masses of flags appeared like a brand, like a logo: here, one was not in any coffeehouse in any street in any city of any country that perhaps also had a flag: here, one was in a yellow-star house in a yellow-star street in a yellow-star city in the land of yellow stars on a red ground.
