Scene 15

Tracker in hand, Maille trudged deeper into the desert. The signal was clear and its origin must definitely lie just a few meters away from him: three metres perhaps, two, here, it must be! He pushed aside some sand and there it lay: the professor's watch. He picked it up, it was ticking, showing the time 18.20. Only, Koslow was no longer there. When one gauged the distance from the spot where the watch had lain and the strip, it seemed as though someone could have flung the watch out of a car window. That, however, did not mean that the professor had been physically present in the United Arab Emirates. It could mean that Hing had had the watch brought to this spot only in order to mislead Maille or perhaps even to make fun of the secret agent. But whatever might be the circumstances that had brought the watch to this deserted spot, the hunt for the professor now threatened to be far more difficult than before.
