The two men, who had eventually turned up to take the injured agent back into the 106 maternal arms of the organisation, had not been very forthcoming. They had, however, given him a slip of paper – with a plan of the Sum-mer Palace, on which a particular spot at the west pond was clearly marked. And they had indicated that he should be at that spot precisely at 1300 hours the following day. If Maille had understood them correctly, he was to meet their boss, a man who went by the name of Colonel Li, at the place.
