Moscow, Winzawod

Scene 10

Maille slept badly: he would have done better to have passed up the vodka. He dreamt about a tuba player and about an angry policeman who wanted to bring hopping gherkins into check. In the morning, with Ruslan's help, he rented a taxi for the day and allowed himself to be driven to the former winery.

The area was devoid of people. Although the galleries and boutiques were open, at that hour there weren't many visitors and shoppers around. Maille ambled through a couple of exhibitions and shopped for a shawl for Marie Soussent. Then he saw Anna Schukowa – she was standing inside a gallery and conversing with a young man, probably an artist or the owner of the establishment. He positioned himself outside the gallery and waited. When she stepped out of the gallery a few minutes later, he started to follow her, keeping a discreet distance.
