Certainly, neither the peculiar spice nor Mata Hari's teeth had anything to do with the reason that the best man in the Lemusan Secret Service had to trudge through the vast, white expanse of the Antarctic – and neither did the penguins that dangled on the streets on Sichuan. What then was the reason? Maille had no idea, not the foggiest – because, in the total stillness of this ice-landscape, even the most silent idea could not escape to the surface of one's consciousness.
