Naturally, head of veal was unavailable at the restaurant – even though the centre of Siem Reap with its «Grand Cafe» and its hotels appeared absolutely French. However, the place did have on offer «Somlar», a sour Khmer soup, and «Amok», a fish preparation in thick and spicy coconut milk, served in small pieces on banana leaves.
On the following day, Maille was scheduled to begin his hunt, in adherence to the message from V-Man Aral, in the ruins of Angkor that lay right behind the city. Something had gone wrong during the relay of the message, however, giving rise to several doubts. But Maille had time. Given that the message had been written on a Cambodian banknote, it would, the agent hoped, survive the impacts of the weath.
